The gallery
A gallery for modern British artists with links to St Ives
Tate St Ives is an art gallery in St Ives, Cornwall, showing work by modern British artists with links to the St Ives area. It looks over Porthmeor beach.
The gasworks
It was built from 1988 to 1993 on the site of an old gasworks
In 1988 the Tate group bought a former gasworks and commissioned the architects Eldred Evans and David Shalev to design a building in a similar style. It included a rotunda looking over Porthmeor Beach and was completed in 1993.
Hepworth
The Tate also manages the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden
In 1980 the Tate group began to manage the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, dedicated to the life and work of the renowned St Ives artist. It then decided to open a museum in the town to show local artists.
Opening
It opened in June 1993 as the second regional gallery of the Tate
The gallery opened in June 1993, the second of the Tate's regional galleries after Tate Liverpool. It received more than 120,000 visitors before the end of the year.

Extension
An extension by Jamie Fobert doubled the space
A competition in 2012 chose Jamie Fobert Architects to design a major extension. The gallery closed in October 2015, reopened in October 2017, and in July 2018 won the Art Fund Museum of the Year Prize.
