Arrival day

Before Day 1. Puerto Varas is a small lakeside town, so settle in on foot and keep the first evening quiet.Details
From the airport
El Tepual airport serves Puerto Montt and is the usual way in, with a flight from Santiago. Buses, shared vans and taxis run from the airport to Puerto Varas along the main road, a short drive along the coast. Allow extra time after a long flight.
Getting around
The lakes, the park and the estuary are far easier with a rental car, and the roads are paved to most of the places in this plan. Puerto Varas and the Puerto Montt market are fine by bus or taxi. Check road news before a park day.
Rain gear
Rain is common in this part of Chile, even in a warm month, and the volcanoes are often hidden by cloud. Pack a waterproof jacket, shoes that dry fast and a spare pair of socks, and treat a clear view as a bonus.
The ground moves
Chile has earthquakes, and several of the volcanoes here are active. Ask your hotel where the exit and the meeting point are, and follow the local alerts. Day 1 starts on the lakefront, so you will already be close to the water.

Day 1. The Reloncavi Estuary and the national park

3 stops · 60.6 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

    Ralun Estuary

A long arm of the sea where the Petrohue and Cochamo rivers meet the water, with green hills and volcanoes on every side. The road along it is quiet and slow, with places to stop and look.

Go when Morning, with cloud lifting off the hills.

Local tip The road is slow and narrow in places, so drive carefully and stop at the wide spots rather than on the bends.

    MiddayWorth a long look

    Lake Todos los Santos

A long green lake surrounded by forest and volcanoes, reached by a road beside the falls. Walk down to the shore, sit by the water and let the afternoon stay open.

Go when Midday, with a picnic.

Local tip The water is cold and the weather changes fast. Sit on the shore, and check ahead if you would like a boat on the lake.

  3. Lunch

    A picnic with sopaipillas

Sopaipillas are round, flat fried pastries made with pumpkin dough, eaten with a spicy tomato sauce, or sweet with syrup. Pack a few from a bakery for the lake shore.

Local tip Keep them warm in a paper bag and eat them within the hour.

Hot spring on the Reloncavi Estuary

Hot springs are a kind of stop here, set in the forest along the estuary road, with warm pools and wooden tubs. Check ahead on days and bookings, bring slippers and a towel, and go back to the car with a warm, easy feeling.

Go when Midday, with nowhere else to be.

Local tip Check ahead on days and bookings, because small springs have their own rules. Bring slippers and a towel, drink water and get out if you feel faint.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Day 2. The national park and Puerto Montt

    Petrohué Falls

A set of rapids where the Petrohué River squeezes through black volcanic rock, with short, easy paths and railings along the edge. Park and walk the few minutes to the viewpoints. Check ahead on access and park rules.

Go when Morning, before the tour groups.

Local tip The paths are short and well made, so you can see the whole falls in under an hour. Keep behind the railings, because the rocks are slippery.

    Angelmo Fish Market

A noisy waterfront market of fish stalls, shellfish, dried seaweed and wool goods, with small cook shops serving lunch beside the boats. Walk the lane to the end and back.

Go when Late morning, when the stalls are full.

Local tip Walk the whole lane before you buy, and look at the small cook shops on the upper floor. Smell the shellfish, then decide.

  4. Lunch

    Shellfish at the market

The southern coast is known for mussels, clams and sea urchins, served in small cook shops beside the market. A shared plate is a good way to try a few.

Local tip Choose a busy stall, and eat shellfish only if it was just served hot or fresh.

    AfternoonCheck the road first

    Osorno Volcano

The snow-capped cone that rules the view from the whole lake. A road climbs part of the way up its side, and on a clear day the view over the lake and forests is wide. Check ahead, because the road closes when the weather is poor.

Go when Morning, when cloud is lightest.

Local tip Ask your hotel in the morning whether the road and the view are clear. If the top is in cloud, swap this for a long lunch by the lake.

If it rains. Angelmo Fish Market is covered, so keep it. Move Petrohué Falls and Osorno Volcano to a dry day if you can.

    Puerto Varas Lakefront

A long, easy walk along the edge of Lake Llanquihue, with benches, rose gardens and a pier. On a clear day the snow cone of the Osorno volcano rises across the water.

Go when Morning, when the water is still, and again near sunset (about 8:12 PM).

Local tip Walk to the end of the pier and look across for the volcano. If cloud hides it, come back later in the day, because it often clears.

    Frutillar Lakeshore

A wide, tidy lakeshore of wooden houses, small gardens and a long pier, with the Osorno volcano on the far side of the water when the cloud allows. Walk it slowly in both directions.

Go when Morning, before the day visitors arrive.

Local tip Walk the shore in one direction and come back along the street of old wooden houses, to see both sides of the town.

  4. Lunch

    Empanadas

A baked pastry filled with beef, onion and egg, or with cheese, a Chilean favorite. A quick, filling lunch to eat on the lake wall.

Local tip Eat them warm, and share one of each kind.

    MiddayPick the garden

    German Colonial Museum

A museum of the German settlers' life, set in a garden above the lake, with a water mill, a smithy and a house furnished as it was long ago. Check ahead on days and hours before you go.

Go when Late morning, then a slow lunch near the lake.

Local tip Even if you do not go into every building, walk the garden. The water mill and the old workshops show how the first families lived.

If it rains. German Colonial Museum is covered, so keep it. Move Puerto Varas Lakefront and Frutillar Lakeshore to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The airport is a short drive from Puerto Varas, so the last morning can stay slow.Details
The last morning
Have a slow breakfast, take a last walk on the lakefront and pack the night before. Hotels in town will usually hold your bags if your flight is later in the day.
The car
If you rented a car, read the return rules before you sign, and fill the tank on the road to Puerto Montt. Leave the car at the airport desk well before check-in opens.
To El Tepual
The drive to the airport follows the coast road, and the main road can be slow around Puerto Montt in the busy hours. Give yourself extra time, and take the earlier bus or van if in doubt.
Weather and flights
Low cloud can slow flights in the south. Check the airline notices the evening before and again in the morning, and do not book a tight connection onward.
