Arrival day

Before Day 1. Chicago is easy to reach and easy to get around, so keep the first evening light.Details
Getting here
Most visitors fly into O'Hare or Midway. Both have an L train line that runs straight into the Loop, so you do not need a car. Allow extra time with a group and plenty of bags.
Settling in
Pick a hotel in or near the Loop or the Near North Side so most days start with a short walk or a short ride. Check ahead on a transit card or app that works for the whole group, and on timed tickets for the busiest places.
First evening
Walk to the lake or along the river after you check in, then share your first deep dish pizza. Day 1 starts with Cloud Gate, which is quieter in the morning.

Day 1. The Loop and Millennium Park and Grant Park and the lakefront

4 stops · 1.8 mi

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Millennium Park and Cloud Gate

A big, bright park in the middle of the city, built around the mirrored sculpture everyone calls the bean. Walk under it, look up and make faces at your own reflection. Go early, before the crowds.

Go when Early morning, when the bean is quiet and the light is soft on the mirror.

Local tip Walk right under the arch, where the surface bends the whole skyline. The Crown Fountain faces are close by if the group wants more to look at.

    MiddayWorth a short stop

    Maggie Daley Park

A park by the lake with a big play area, a climbing wall, a ribbon path that turns into an ice rink in winter and wide lawns for a picnic. A good spot for children and anyone who wants a break from museums.

Go when Midday, when the group wants to burn off some energy before the museum.

Local tip It sits right next to Millennium Park, so the walk is short. Bring a snack and let the little ones lead.

    Chicago Riverwalk

A wide path along the south bank of the river, with steps down to the water, cafes and the old bridges overhead. Stroll as the sky turns pink and the lights come on in the towers.

Go when Late afternoon into dusk (about 7:00 PM), when the towers glow along the water.

Local tip An architecture cruise on the river is a lovely way to see the buildings from below. Check ahead on a seat for the time you want, and book a day or two early.

    Navy Pier

A long pier into the lake with a Ferris wheel, little shops, boats and wide views back at the skyline. There is plenty for every age, and the lights are lovely at dusk. Check ahead on rides and any events.

Go when Late afternoon into evening (about 7:00 PM), when the skyline turns gold from the end of the pier.

Local tip Walk to the far end for the view, and ride the wheel if the group is up for it. Check ahead on rides and any seasonal events.

  5. Dinner

    Dinner by the lake

The pier has plenty of casual places that serve burgers, pizza, seafood and salads, all with a lake view. Easy for a mixed-age group to agree on.

Local tip Book ahead for a larger group on a weekend, and ask for a table with a view.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Day 2. The Museum Campus and the Loop and Millennium Park

4 stops · 3.7 mi

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    The Field Museum

A huge natural history museum, home to Sue the Tyrannosaurus rex, along with mummies, gems and halls of animals. Choose two or three halls and let the group split up and meet again. Check ahead on timed tickets.

Go when Morning, when the halls are quieter.

Local tip Start with Sue the dinosaur, then let everyone pick one more hall. A museum is easier when you agree on a meeting spot first.

    Willis Tower Skydeck

A glass ledge on the 103rd floor of one of the tallest buildings in the country, with views of the whole city and the lake. Go early on a clear day. Check ahead on timed tickets.

Go when Early morning on a clear day, before the lines build.

Local tip Check ahead on a timed ticket. If anyone dislikes heights, the view is just as good from the window and not only the glass ledge.

  3. Lunch

    A Chicago-style hot dog

A beef hot dog on a poppy seed bun with mustard, onion, relish, pickle, tomato and peppers. A quick lunch to grab near the park.

Local tip Locals will tell you not to put ketchup on it. A kid who is not sure can ask for a plain hot dog.

    Shedd Aquarium

A big aquarium on the lake, with tanks that run from a rainforest river to the open ocean. A short walk from the Field Museum, so there is no ride. Check ahead on timed tickets and any shows you want.

Go when Midday, after the Field Museum, when you want to sit and watch the water.

Local tip It can fill up on busy days, so check ahead on timed tickets. Sit by the big tank for a while and watch the fish drift past.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    The Art Institute of Chicago

One of the great art museums, with the lion statues at the front steps and room after room of paintings. Pick two or three rooms to share instead of seeing everything. Check ahead on timed tickets and any exhibit that needs one.

Go when Afternoon, when you want to be inside and sit down.

Local tip Pick two or three rooms together. A famous painting or a hall of armor tends to hold a group better than a long walk through every gallery.

  6. Dinner

Deep dish pizza for the table

The thick, buttery crust and the sauce on top are the Chicago pizza most visitors come for. Order one to share and wait for it. It is worth it.

Local tip Deep dish takes a good while to bake, so ask when you sit down, or order a starter first.

Hours change, so check before you go.

If it rains. Everything today is indoors, so rain does not change the plan.

Departure day

After the last day. The train to the airport is straightforward, so you can leave a little slack.Details
Check-out
Pack the night before and ask the hotel to hold your bags if your flight is later in the day. A slow last breakfast together suits the trip.
To the airport
The L train reaches both airports from the Loop, and a taxi or rideshare is the easy choice with a lot of luggage. Allow extra time for the ride and for check-in, especially with children.
If you have a few hours
Walk the lakefront path one more time, take a last look at the bean or share a final Chicago hot dog before the ride out.
