Building

The present church was built between 1407 and 1438

The first church here was founded in 1309. It could not hold the believers of the growing town, so a new church was built from 1407 to 1438 on the old foundations, in the reign of Rosenberg Henry III.

The vaults

A contract set eight columns and a vault on Milevsko and Prague models

The contract with Master Jan said that eight columns should support sexpartite vaulting on the pattern of the Church of Saint Giles in Milevsko. The net vault was inspired by Peter Parler's cathedral in Prague. The church was consecrated in 1439.

The tomb

A Rosenberg tomb stood before the altar until 1783

A tomb was built in the middle of the presbytery in 1592, with a Rosenberg emblem, a rider, above the main altar. The Jesuits objected to its place. The rider was removed in 1621, and the above-ground part came down in 1783.

Hearts

The hearts of the Krumlov dukes are kept in a small tomb

The Schwarzenbergs built a chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in 1725 and 1726. A small cellar in its left wall holds the hearts of Adam and Eleonora, placed side by side. The tradition began there, and the dukes and their wives followed.

“Here are stored the hearts of Adam and his wife Eleonora, princes of Schwarzenberg and dukes of Krumlov.”

the Latin text on the black marble plate

The tower

A neo-Gothic tower replaced the Baroque onion dome in 1893

A drastic neo-Gothic reconstruction in the 19th century removed Baroque elements. In 1893 and 1894 the original Baroque onion dome tower was replaced by the current Neo-Gothic tower. In 1995 the church was declared a national cultural monument.

Day 3, afternoon

It comes after Zlatá Koruna Abbey. Then Křížový vrch.
