1253

The first castle was built in 1253 by the Vítkovci family

The earliest documented reference to the castle is from 1253, when it was the residence of Witiko of Prčice. The Vítkovci were the main branch of the powerful Bohemian family Rosenberg.

Rosenbergs

The Rosenbergs took over in 1302 and began a Renaissance makeover

After the Vítkov lineage of the Krumlov family ended in 1302, the castle came under Rosenberg control. The new owners began a significant Renaissance makeover led by William of Rosenberg.

Eggenbergs

Ferdinand II made Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg the Duke of Krumau

Anna Maria administered the castle from 1649 to 1664 as a widow. Her son Johann Christian I von Eggenberg was responsible for the Baroque renovations and the castle theatre. In 1717 the castle passed to the Schwarzenbergs.

Cloak Bridge

A five-story Cloak Bridge from 1764 links the Upper Castle to the theatre

The castle stands on a steep rocky headland above the Vltava. The Cloak Bridge, five stories high, crosses a deep carved moat and connects the Upper Castle with the castle theatre and gardens. In the courtyard is a stone fountain from 1641.

The theatre

The Baroque theatre of 1767 is among the best preserved in the world

The Baroque Theatre from 1767 is one of the best preserved Baroque theatres in the world. West of it are the castle gardens in the late baroque style, and since 1959 a revolving auditorium has stood in the gardens.
