A pope's fountain

A cardinal ordered the fountain to celebrate his uncle's election

Cardinal Legate Charles Borromeo commissioned it to mark the election of his uncle as Pope Pius IV, and a whole building was demolished to make space. Tommaso Laureti completed the design in 1563, and the fountain was finished in 1565.

The sculptor

Giambologna lost the Florence fountain and got this one

The bronze Neptune was fixed in place around 1566. It was an early design by Giambologna, who had submitted a model for the Fountain of Neptune in Florence but lost that commission to Baccio Bandinelli.

Four rivers

The dolphins stand for four great rivers

Four Nereids stand on the base, with jets of water from their breasts. Cherubs hold dolphins that represent major rivers of the known world: the Ganges, the Nile, the Amazon and the Danube. Neptune's raised hand is read as the Pope's mastery of Bologna.

A wrong date

The date carved on the fountain is wrong

Four Latin inscriptions say it was built to decorate the square, with public money, for the people. The fourth gives the date 1564, but the fountain was officially finished in 1566.

The trident

Maserati took its trident from this Neptune

The trident of the statue was used by the Maserati brothers as the emblem of their first car, the Tipo 26. Mario Maserati made the logo in 1920 at the suggestion of a family friend, Marquis Diego de Sterlich. Copies of the fountain stand in Laeken, Batumi and Palos Verdes Estates.

Day 3, evening

It comes after Basilica of San Domenico.
