Arrival

Dominic came to Bologna in 1218 and held two General Chapters here

Dominic Guzman arrived in Bologna in January 1218 and was impressed by the vitality of the city. In 1219 the brothers moved to the small church of San Nicolò of the Vineyards, where the order held its first two General Chapters, in 1220 and 1221.

The shrine

Pilgrims could not see the grave, so a new shrine was built

In 1233 the remains of the saint were moved to a simple marble sarcophagus. Most pilgrims could not see it for the crowds, so Nicola Pisano designed a new shrine in 1264. The remains were moved into it in 1267, and it was funded as a civic monument with a special tax.

Five centuries

Work on the shrine went on for almost five centuries

In the 15th century Niccolò dell'Arca added a canopy, and work on the shrine would continue for almost five centuries. The chapel under the cupola also holds three sculptures by Michelangelo: Angel, St. Proclus and St. Petronius.

The square

The square in front is still paved with pebbles

The square is paved with pebbles, as it was in medieval times. The faithful used it to listen to sermons, and it was the original cemetery. A column with a bronze statue of St Dominic dates from 1627, and a Madonna of the Rosary column of 1632 commemorates the end of the plague.

The saint's end

Dominic died in the church of San Nicolò in 1221

Saint Dominic died in the church of San Nicolò on 6 August 1221 and was buried behind its altar. The church was expanded afterwards and grew into the Basilica of Saint Dominic, consecrated by Pope Innocent IV on 17 October 1251.

Day 3, afternoon

It comes after Mercato delle Erbe. Then Fountain of Neptune.
