Arrival day

Before Day 1. The days are big and start early, so keep the first evening light.Details
Getting here
Most visitors fly into Calgary and drive about an hour and a half west to Banff. Shuttles and buses run from the airport to town, and a rental car is worth having for the two outer days.
Settling in
Check-in is usually in the afternoon. Check ahead on the national park pass, parking, the shuttles to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, and any trail closures or wildlife notices. Pack layers, because mountain weather changes fast.
First evening
Walk Banff Avenue, eat early and look at the forecast for Day 1. The gondola is at its best on a clear morning, so be ready to swap the days around.

Day 1. The south side of Banff and Banff town

5 stops · 50.3 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Banff Gondola

A gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain to a ridge with a wide view over Banff, the Bow Valley and the peaks around it, with boardwalks along the top. Go on the first rides of the day, and check ahead on tickets, the weather and any closures.

Go when First thing, on a clear morning, before the ridge fills.

Local tip The weather at the top can differ from the town, so bring a layer. Check ahead before you drive over, since cloud can hide the view.

    Johnston Canyon

A limestone canyon with boardwalks and a path that follow the creek past waterfalls to the lower and upper falls. It is very popular, so go early, and check ahead for trail closures, parking and shuttles.

Go when First thing in the morning, before the boardwalks fill.

Local tip The path is narrow in places and often wet, so wear shoes with a grip. Check ahead for closures and for shuttles on the days the lot is full.

  3. Lunch

    A picnic by the road

    Bow Falls

A wide ledge of falls where the Bow River drops beside the old hotel, reached on a riverside walk from the middle of town. Stay as long as you like, and look back at the mountains from the viewpoints.

Go when Midday, as a stretch between the gondola and the afternoon trail.

Local tip Walk the river path from town instead of driving, then follow the viewpoints above the falls for a look back at the valley.

    Banff Upper Hot Springs

A mineral hot spring pool on the lower slope of Sulphur Mountain, with mountain views from the water. A calm end to a big day. Check ahead for tickets and any closures.

    Vermilion Lakes

A chain of quiet lakes just west of town, with Mount Rundle across the water and Sulphur Mountain behind you. Pull over at a lookout and watch the light fade, and check ahead on parking and any closures.

Go when Sunset (about 7:56 PM), when the light turns gold across the water.

Local tip Park only at the marked pull-outs, and give wildlife on the road plenty of room. The view of Mount Rundle across the lake is the one to wait for.

  7. Dinner

    Elk, bison or Alberta beef

Local tip Book ahead on a weekend, since the good tables fill early in the season.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

    Moraine Lake

Go when The first slot of the day you can book, when the light is low and the shore is quiet.

Local tip Do not drive up on a hope. Check ahead on the shuttle and book before you go, and bring a warm layer, because it is cool by the water.
