Arrival day

Before Day 1. The town is small and walked, but the best views are on the mountain roads, so plan for a car.Details
From the airport
The Asheville airport is south of the city, a short drive from downtown. A taxi or a ride share is the easy way in. You will not need a car for Day 1, so rent one only from Day 2, or book a driver for the Parkway days.
Roads and repairs
Hurricane Helene in 2024 damaged the Blue Ridge Parkway and the River Arts District, and repairs and reopening were still going on in 2026. Check the Parkway’s own road status page, and ask which studios are open, before you plan each day.
Eating well
The town has a serious food scene and many breweries. Book a table for dinner a few days ahead, and if you plan to taste anything, share a driver or take a ride, and do not drive after.
Beds and seasons
October color and summer weekends fill rooms early, and rates rise, so book ahead. Mornings and evenings are cool at height even in summer, so pack a layer. Day 1 starts in the middle of town, near Pack Square.

Day 1. The northern Parkway and Downtown Asheville

4 stops · 40.5 mi

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Folk Art Center

A museum of Appalachian crafts at milepost 382 on the Parkway, run with the Southern Highland Craft Guild, with galleries of quilts, pottery, wood and weaving. A good first look at the region’s makers.

Go when Morning, when the galleries are quiet, or on a wet day.

Local tip Check the Parkway’s status before you drive up. The galleries are indoors, so they suit rain, and the shop has pieces made by members of the craft guild.

    Craggy Gardens

A high ridge on the Parkway covered with purple rhododendron that bloom in mid-June, with trails to a bare summit and wide views. Helene repairs have slowed the road here, so check the Parkway status first.

Go when Late morning, when the mist has lifted, and in mid-June for the rhododendron bloom.

Local tip Helene repairs have slowed traffic around here, so check the Parkway’s road status. The short trail to the Pinnacle climbs steadily to a wide view, and the wind is cold.

  3. Lunch

    A Parkway picnic

There is little food on the Parkway, so pack bread, cheese, fruit and a flask of coffee and eat at a pull-off with a view.

Local tip Check the weather first, since the high Parkway can close in fog or ice.

    MiddayWorth a short stop

    Basilica of St. Lawrence

A church built in 1905 with one of the largest freestanding elliptical domes in North America, designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino, who is buried inside. It is a working church, so check ahead for visiting times and keep your voice low.

Go when Midday, when the sun comes through the high windows.

Local tip Look up at the great oval dome, which spans more than 80 feet. It is a working church, so check ahead for visiting times and step in quietly.

    Mount Mitchell

At 6,684 feet, the highest peak in the Appalachians and east of the Mississippi River, reached by a state road off the Parkway and a short paved path to the top. It is cold and often in cloud, so bring a jacket and check ahead.

Go when Afternoon on a clear day, when the summit is out of cloud.

Local tip The state road up can close in winter and bad weather, so check ahead. The walk from the car park is short and paved. It is much colder at the top than in town.

  6. Dinner

Pimento cheese and a Southern plate

Pimento cheese, a spread of cheddar and peppers, is the Southern snack on every table. Follow it with fried chicken, greens or a bowl of beans and cornbread.

Local tip Order a plate to share and ask what the kitchen is proudest of that night.

If it rains. Folk Art Center and Basilica of St. Lawrence are covered, so keep them. Move Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell to a dry day if you can.

Day 2. Pisgah and the southern Parkway and Biltmore and the south side

    Biltmore Estate

The great French château-style house built for George Vanderbilt between 1889 and 1895, billed as the largest privately owned house in the United States, set in gardens and forest. It is a timed visit, so check ahead and book.

Go when Morning, soon after opening, with your house tour already booked.

Local tip Book the house visit ahead and leave time for the gardens and the conservatory. The estate is large, so wear walking shoes and plan on at least half a day.

    MorningWorth a short stop

    Looking Glass Falls

A tall waterfall that drops beside the road in the Pisgah National Forest, in view from a viewing platform by a short flight of steps. A first stop of the day, and a quick one.

Go when Morning, when the mist is rising and the road is quiet.

Local tip The falls are seen from a platform below the road, down a short set of steps. Do not climb on the wet rocks below, since they are slippery and the current is strong.

  4. Lunch

    A trail lunch

Bring a sandwich and fruit for the forest and eat by the stream. Few places are open on the southern Parkway, so carry water for the whole day.

Local tip Pack out everything, and keep food in the car.

    Graveyard Fields

A high mountain valley over 5,000 feet, beside the Parkway, with a stream running through three waterfalls. The loop trail is popular, and the berry bushes turn red in autumn. Check the trail and car park before you go.

Go when Midday on a dry day, or in early autumn when the berry leaves turn red.

Local tip The loop trail can be muddy and busy. Check the Parkway and the car park status, and wear shoes with grip for the stairs down to the lower falls.

    River Arts District

A district of old factories and warehouses beside the French Broad River, now filled with artists’ studios, galleries and murals. It was badly flooded in 2024, so check ahead for which studios have reopened.

Go when Late afternoon or early evening, when the studios are open and the light is warm.

Local tip The district flooded badly in 2024 and is rebuilding, so check which studios are open. Walk the length of the main road, look at the murals and talk to the artists you meet.

  7. Dinner

A craft beer and a long supper

Asheville is known for its many breweries, and many put on a plate of good food. Taste a flight with your supper, and take your time.

Local tip Share a ride or take a taxi after a tasting, and eat before you drink more.

If it rains. Biltmore Estate is covered, so keep it. Move Looking Glass Falls, Graveyard Fields and River Arts District to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. The mountain roads are slow, so leave more time than the map says.Details
The way out
The airport is a short drive from downtown. If your last stop is in Pisgah or on the Parkway, allow an hour or more, and check the road status the evening before.
Your flight
Do not plan a long drive on the day you fly. A closed section of road or a fog bank can add an hour, so book a flight with a buffer.
Returning the car
Fill the tank before the airport. If you drop the car in a different city, ask your rental company about the rules.
If you have a few hours
Walk the downtown streets once more, look in a gallery you passed, and take a last coffee on a bench in Pack Square Park.

Questions people ask

How many days does this plan cover?

It covers 2 days in Asheville, planned for mid October. Each day is built around a small number of stops, with room to rest.

Who is this plan for?

It was planned for most travelers. The pace and the places reflect that, so check it fits how you travel.

Is anything on this plan booked?

No. Places marked "book ahead" need a reservation. Hours, prices and availability change, so confirm before you go.

Can I plan my own days like this?

Yes. Archie drafts a day by day plan for your dates and takes your pace, the weather and who is travelling into account. You can start one from the Archie app.

Can I change this plan?

Yes. It is a starting point you can change to fit your own trip: swap a place, add a day or move the pace.

How much walking is there?

Each day has about 40.5 to 50.0 miles between its stops, and 90.5 miles in all across 2 days. A short hop is a walk and a longer one a ride. Distances are straight-line estimates, so allow extra for the streets.
