Arrival day

Before Day 1. Amsterdam is small and flat, so you can settle in on foot and keep the plans loose.Details
From the airport
Schiphol Airport is close to the city, and a direct train runs from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal, the main station. Taxis are the easy choice with heavy bags. Allow extra time after a long flight.
Getting around
The center is best on foot, with trams for the longer stretches. Bicycles have their own lanes and move fast, so look both ways before you step across a red path. Check ahead how to pay for trams and trains.
No car needed
Every day trip in this plan goes by train. The main station in each city is close to its old center, so you walk from the platform to the first stop. The Hague has two main stations, so check which one is nearer your plan.
Book ahead
The Anne Frank House needs a booked time, and the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum are easier with one. Book these as soon as your dates are set, and leave the rest of the week loose.

Day 1. Amsterdam center

4 stops · 1.6 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningWorth the time

    Anne Frank House

The house on the canal where Anne Frank and her family hid, and where she wrote her diary. A quiet, serious visit. It needs a booked time, so check ahead.

Go when Morning, at the time you booked ahead.

Local tip Plan a quiet hour afterward. A walk along the canal outside, or a seat in a nearby cafe, helps you take it in.

    MiddayWorth the time

    Jordaan

A neighborhood of narrow streets, small canals and little shops, once home to working families. Wander without a plan and look into the courtyards.

Go when Midday, with no plan and a lunch somewhere along the way.

Local tip Turn off the main streets onto the smaller ones. The little courtyards with a gate and a door are what the neighborhood is about.

  3. Lunch

    Apple pie and coffee

The Dutch apple pie is deep and spiced, usually served with whipped cream. A slice with a coffee is a good lunch break in the Jordaan.

Local tip Ask for it with whipped cream, which is how locals eat it.

    AfternoonWorth a short visit

    Begijnhof

A hidden courtyard of old houses and a small garden, tucked behind the busy streets near Spui. It is a quiet place to sit for a few minutes.

Go when Afternoon, when the courtyard is calm.

Local tip Enter by the small door and keep your voice low. People live there, and the quiet is part of the place.

    EveningAn evening stop

    Dam Square

The big open square in the middle of the city, beside the Royal Palace. Come in the evening to watch the city go by.

Go when Evening, when the square fills and the buildings glow.

Local tip The square is busy and bright, so sit on the steps and watch, then walk a street or two away for dinner.

  6. Dinner

    Bitterballen at a brown cafe

Bitterballen are crisp, round croquettes with a soft, savory center, served with mustard. Order a plate with a drink in an old brown cafe, named for its smoke-stained wood.

Local tip Share a plate and let them cool for a minute, because the center is very hot.

If it rains. Anne Frank House is covered, so keep it. Move Jordaan, Begijnhof and Dam Square to a dry day if you can.

Day 2. The museum quarter and De Pijp and Amsterdam center

4 stops · 3.0 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

  1. 1
    MorningPick your rooms

    Rijksmuseum

The great museum of Dutch art and history, with paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Choose a few rooms and stay with them.

Go when Morning, right after you arrive.

Local tip Go straight to the Night Watch by Rembrandt, then to the small rooms of everyday scenes by Vermeer. Skip the rest if you are tired.

    MiddayWorth the time

    Van Gogh Museum

The largest collection of the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, shown in the order of his life. Book a time ahead.

Go when Midday, at a time booked ahead.

Local tip Start on the first floor and follow the paintings in order. The story of his life makes the pictures easier to read.

  3. Lunch

    Dutch pancakes

Pannenkoeken are large, thin pancakes, sweet or savory, much bigger than a breakfast pancake. A plate with bacon or cheese is a full meal.

Local tip Try the sweet version with syrup, or bacon and cheese for a savory one.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    The canal ring

The half circles of canals around the old center, lined with tall, narrow houses and bridges. Walk a stretch of it, or see it from the water on a canal boat.

Go when Late afternoon, when the light is soft on the water.

Local tip Walk it, or take a canal boat for an easy hour on the water. Look at the houses leaning slightly forward, and the hooks at the top used to lift furniture.

    EveningWorth the time

    Vondelpark

The city’s big park, with ponds, lawns and shaded paths. Walk it slowly, or rent a bicycle and ride through.

Go when Late afternoon, around sunset (about 8:38 PM), when the park turns gold.

Local tip Walk to the middle of the park and stay a while by the water. A bicycle makes the whole loop easy.

  6. Dinner

    An Indonesian rice table

The Netherlands has a long link with Indonesia, and its food is part of everyday life here. A rice table brings many small dishes to share with rice.

Local tip Go with at least two people so you can order several dishes.

If it rains. Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are covered, so keep them. Move The canal ring and Vondelpark to a dry day if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. Plan the way to the airport the night before and the last morning stays easy.Details
Last night
Rotterdam is the last day trip, and the train back to Amsterdam is easy, so you can choose to stay out for dinner. Set an alarm anyway: a quiet evening makes an early flight simpler.
To the airport
Schiphol is a short train ride from Amsterdam Centraal. Walk to the station the night before to see the way, and leave a good margin for security on the day.
A free morning
With a few spare hours, walk a quiet stretch of canal one more time or sit in a corner cafe with a coffee, then collect your bags.
