Arrival day

Before Day 1. Manaus is hot and humid all year, so plan the first evening around the heat and keep it easy.Details
From the airport
Manaus airport sits on the northern edge of the city, a drive from the center. Taxis and an airport bus run into town; check ahead for the current routes and ask the fare before you set off in a taxi.
Heat and rain
The air is hot and wet in every season, with sudden downpours. Wear light clothes, carry a thin rain layer and drink water often. Plan the long walks for the cooler early hours.
Before you fly
Check the official health advice well ahead of the trip. Yellow fever vaccination is commonly advised, and malaria risk in the region should be discussed with a travel clinic. Some vaccines need time before departure.
First evening
Walk to the opera house square as the heat eases and have a simple dinner nearby. Day 1 starts in the old center, so stay close to it.

    Teatro Amazonas

The grand opera house with a tiled dome, built in the middle of the forest in the rubber boom. Check ahead on visits, because guided tours depend on the schedule.

Go when Morning, before the heat builds.

Local tip Look at the tiled dome from the square first, then go in if a visit is open. Check ahead, because visits depend on the schedule.

    Meeting of the Waters

Just downstream from the city, the dark Rio Negro and the pale, sandy Solimões run side by side for a long way without mixing. A lasting natural sight, best seen from a boat.

Go when Morning, by boat, when the light is soft.

Local tip The two rivers differ in color and temperature, and the line between them runs for a long way. The water level changes what you see, so check ahead.

  3. Lunch

    A tucumã sandwich

A soft bread roll filled with slices of tucumã, a palm fruit, with cheese and sometimes ham. A quick breakfast or lunch from a small cafe in the center.

Local tip Eat it standing at the counter, with a glass of cold guaraná.

    Adolpho Lisboa Market

The old iron market hall beside the river, with stalls of river fish, fruit, herbs and Brazil nuts. Walk through slowly and look before you buy.

Go when Early morning, when the fish arrives.

Local tip Walk the stalls once before you buy. Try a fruit you do not know, and ask the stallholder what it is called.

  5. Dinner

    Pirarucu fish

Pirarucu is a giant river fish with firm, white flesh, often grilled or fried in chunks. Look for it on the menu of a small restaurant near the market or the port.

Local tip Ask whether it comes from a sustainable source, and share a plate with rice and farofa.

If it rains. Teatro Amazonas is covered, so keep it. Move Meeting of the Waters and Adolpho Lisboa Market to a dry day if you can.

    Guided jungle walk

A guide shows the forest floor, the huge trees, the medicine plants and the signs of animals. Wear long sleeves, closed shoes and repellent, and stay behind the guide.

Go when Morning, when the forest is cooler.

Local tip Wear long sleeves, long trousers and closed shoes, and use repellent. Stay on the path with the guide, and do not touch plants or trees you do not know.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    Canoe in the flooded forest

When the river is high, the forest floods and a canoe slides between the trunks and under the branches. A quiet guide-led paddle, and the water level decides how far you go.

Go when Afternoon, when the light slants through the trees.

Local tip When the water is high, the canoe goes where a walker cannot. When it is low, the same trip looks different, so ask what your guide expects.

  4. Lunch

Fish and manioc at the lodge

Meals at a jungle lodge are simple: river fish, rice, beans and manioc flour. Eat what is on the table and ask what each dish is called.

Local tip Tell the lodge about any allergy when you book, not at the table.

    EveningGuided only

    Night wildlife canoe

After dark a guide paddles slowly along the bank with a light, looking for the glint of eyes. Caimans and night birds are common sights, and it is guided only, never on your own.

Go when After dark, with a guide.

Local tip Never go out alone at night. A guide knows where the caimans rest and how to keep the canoe safe, so follow the guide and stay seated.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. A calm morning matters more than an extra stop.Details
Wet gear
Boat days leave clothes damp and boots muddy. Dry everything in the sun on your last afternoon and pack the damp items in a separate bag.
To the airport
The airport is a drive from the center, and city traffic can slow it. Leave early, and ask your hotel to book a taxi the night before. Check ahead for the bus if you prefer it.
Souvenirs
Brazil nuts, guarana and river crafts are easy to carry. Ask your airline about rules for food and plant items before you pack them, and buy crafts at a fair price from the maker.
Health after you return
If you feel unwell with a fever in the weeks after you return, tell the doctor you travelled in the Amazon region.
