Arrival day

Before Day 1. You land in the east and sleep in the west, so keep the first evening short and the first day light.Details
From the airport
Faro is the main airport for the whole Algarve. Lagos is a drive west along the coast, mostly on a motorway. Taxis and transfers wait outside arrivals, and a rental car is the simplest way to start this trip.
Getting around
Lagos old town and its beaches are close enough to walk. For Sagres, Silves, Carvoeiro and Benagil you want a car. Tavira and Faro are easy on foot once you are there, and the trains along the coast serve them both.
Your car
Some Algarve motorways charge tolls electronically, so ask the rental desk how to pay before you leave the lot. Park outside the old town walls in Lagos and walk in, because the lanes are narrow.
First evening
Stroll the old town, find a table in a square and order something simple from the grill. Day 1 starts a few streets away, so there is no need to plan more than that.

Day 1. Tavira and its island and Faro and Olhao

3 stops · 32.2 km

Built from the plan’s must-sees, grouped so each day stays close together and ordered by time of day.

    MorningWorth the time

    Ilha de Tavira

A long, narrow sandy island across the lagoon, reached by a short ferry from the mainland. Walk along the dunes and swim on the open sea side.

Go when Morning, on an early ferry, before the beach fills.

Local tip Walk away from the landing point along the sand, and the crowd soon thins out. Bring water, hats and food, because there is not much shade on the sand.

    AfternoonWorth the time

    Tavira old town

A town of tiled roofs, small squares and churches on both banks of the river. Walk the lanes and see how many church towers you can count.

Go when Late afternoon, as the town cools down.

Local tip Look up for the roofs, which are tiled in an unusual shape. Follow a lane away from the river and see where it goes.

  3. Lunch

    Octopus at the water

Santa Luzia calls itself the octopus capital, and the little cafes on the quay serve it grilled or in a salad. Eat with a view of the boats.

Local tip Order a small glass of white wine and ask for the day's special.

  4. 3
    AfternoonWorth the time

    Faro old town

A small walled town of white houses and stone squares, entered through an arch. A calm place for a last walk and a coffee in the shade.

Go when Afternoon, when the stone is warm.

Local tip Enter through the arch and wander the quiet squares. Most of the old town is only a few streets wide, so you cannot get lost for long.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Day 2. Lagos

    Ponta da Piedade

A headland of golden cliffs, sea arches and little grottoes just south of town. Walk the clifftop path, or go out on the water in a small boat, and look back at the rock.

Go when Morning, when the cliffs are lit from the side.

Local tip Walk the clifftop first for the shapes of the rock, then decide whether to go out on a small boat. The water is calmest early.

    MorningWorth the time

    Lagos old town

A walled town of white houses, tiled squares and cobbled lanes, close to the harbor. Wander without a plan, and look up at the chimneys and the painted doors.

Go when Morning, before the streets warm up.

Local tip Walk in through one of the old gates and take the smallest lanes. The main squares are livelier, and the side streets are where the tiles and the quiet are.

  4. Lunch

    Grilled sardines or sea bream

Fish grilled over charcoal with a little coarse salt, served with boiled potatoes and a tomato salad. The simplest Algarve lunch, and the one locals order.

Local tip Look for a small place near the harbor where the grill is outside, and share a salad.

    About 16 min walk1.3 km
  5. 3
    MiddayA beach to settle on

    Praia Dona Ana

A small beach of pale sand tucked between tall golden cliffs, a short walk from the old town. Swim, read and stay for lunch.

Go when Late morning, once the sun is on the sand.

Local tip Walk down the steps to the cove and find a patch of shade against the cliff. Bring water, because the beach is small and fills up.

  6. Dinner

    A seafood cataplana

A stew of fish, shellfish, tomato and herbs cooked and brought to the table in a round, hinged copper pan. It is made for sharing between two.

Local tip Ask for it for two, and order a plain green salad to go with it.

Day 3. Sagres and the far southwest and the Benagil coast

    Benagil

A small beach in a cove below the cliffs, the starting point for boat and kayak trips along the coast and into the sea caves. Go early, when the water is calm.

Go when Morning, when the sea is calm.

Local tip Boats and kayaks leave from the beach, and conditions at the caves change from day to day. Check ahead for the sea state and for how a trip is run.

    Sagres Fortress

A huge stone fortress on a bare headland with sheer drops to the sea on both sides. Walk the wide paths across the top and look out over the water.

Go when Morning, before the wind and the buses build.

Local tip Wear a hat you can hold on to, and walk to the very end of the headland. The wind is part of the place.

  4. Lunch

A plate of percebes or small clams

The southwest is known for its seafood, including goose barnacles and clams steamed with garlic and herbs. A plate to share before the long afternoon.

Local tip Order the clams with bread to soak up the sauce.

    EveningWorth the time

    Cape St. Vincent

The lighthouse at the far southwestern corner of Portugal, on tall cliffs above the Atlantic. Stay for the sun going down, and bring a jacket.

Go when An hour before sunset (about 7:42 PM), and stay for the light.

Local tip It gets cold and windy once the sun goes down, even in warm months, so bring a layer. Look for the old fishermen along the cliff edge.

  6. Dinner

    A late dinner in Sagres

A grilled fish and a bottle of local white wine in the town, after the sun goes down over the cape. Eat late, as the Portuguese do.

Local tip Book ahead in the high season, and bring a layer, because the evenings are breezy.

If it rains. Everything today is outdoors, so swap this day with a drier one if you can.

Departure day

After the last day. You end in Faro, close to the airport, so the last morning can stay unhurried.Details
Check-out
Many small hotels and guesthouses in Faro will store a bag for you after check-out. Ask when you check in, so you can spend the last hours walking the old town with free hands.
Returning the car
The car return at Faro airport is a short drive from town. Fill the tank the day before, so the morning has no errands, and keep the rental papers somewhere easy to reach.
To the airport
Faro airport sits just west of the city, close enough that a taxi is quick and local buses also run there. Leave time for the security queue, which can be long in the summer and early autumn.
If you have a few hours
Take one last slow coffee on the old town square, then buy a few almond sweets to take home before you go.
