1881

A coastal path along Frenchman Bay, established in 1881

The Shore Path in Bar Harbor was established in 1881. It runs along the shore of Frenchman Bay from Ells Pier, beside Agamont Park, in the north to Wayman Lane in the south. Cycling is not permitted on the path.

The cottages

Past the historic cottages and the Bar Harbor Inn lawn

To the west of the path, mostly in its southern section, are the properties of several of Bar Harbor's historic cottages. The route passes the lawn of the Bar Harbor Inn and the Tudor Revival style John Innes Kane Cottage, built in 1904. Several exits lead through to Main Street.

Balance Rock

A boulder left by an ice age sits beside the path

Balance Rock, deposited during an ice age, sits on the shore beside the path. Grant Park is next to it, just north of the Balance Rock Inn, with an exit to the village green on Main Street.

Repairs

Repaired by the village association, then closed after a storm

Between 2012 and 2016 Bar Harbor's Village Improvement Association repaired and improved 1,200 feet of the path, resurfacing the gravel and rebuilding seawalls. In January 2024 the path suffered extensive damage in a storm and stayed closed into the summer.
