The academy

The Accademia was an art school before it was a museum

The Accademia di Belle Arti was founded on 24 September 1750, and its first director was Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. In 1807 it was re-founded by Napoleonic decree and moved to the Scuola della Carità. Its collections were first opened to the public on 10 August 1817.

The building

Napoleon's administration gave the Accademia a scuola, a convent and a church

The Scuola della Carità was the oldest of the six Scuole Grandi, and the building dates back to 1343. The convent was started in 1561 by Andrea Palladio and never fully completed. The church facade was completed in 1441 by Bartolomeo Bon.

The painters

Venetian painting up to the 19th century hangs in order

The collection holds Venetian painting up to the 19th century, generally arranged chronologically. Artists include Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Canaletto, Giorgione and the Bellini family, as well as Leonardo, Mantegna and Hieronymus Bosch.

The drawing

Leonardo's Vitruvian Man is shown rarely, and once went to Paris

Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man is a drawing on paper, so it is fragile and sensitive to light, and is displayed only rarely. In 2019 the Louvre asked to borrow it. A heritage group refused, but a Venice court allowed it, and it went to Paris from 24 October 2019 to 24 February 2020.

Day 2, morning

Next is Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
