1231
The city gave the Franciscans land here in 1231
In 1231, under Doge Jacopo Tiepolo, the city donated land to establish a monastery and church for the Franciscan Friars Minor. A three-nave church begun in 1250 was finished in 1338, but it was soon replaced by the much larger church of today, which took more than a century to build.
Brick
A plain brick front hides one of the largest churches in the city
The imposing edifice is built of brick and is one of the three notable churches in the city that keep most of their Venetian Gothic appearance. As in many Franciscan churches, the exterior is rather plain, even on the front facade. The bell tower, completed in 1396, is the second tallest in the city after St Mark's.
Titian
Two altarpieces by Titian hang here, and Titian is buried in the church
Paintings in the church include two large and important altarpieces by Titian, the Assumption of the Virgin on the high altar and the Pesaro Madonna in a chapel that the Pesaro family commissioned in 1478. Titian, the most prominent sixteenth-century Venetian painter, is interred in the Frari.
The screen
It keeps the only rood screen still in place in a Venetian church
The basilica contains the only rood screen still in place in a church in Venice, a vestige of the Venetian Gothic architecture that came before Venetian Renaissance architecture. It also holds grand wall monuments to distinguished Venetians, including a number of Doges, and a work by Donatello.
1904
After St Mark's tower fell, cracks opened in this one
After the collapse of St. Mark's bell tower, cracks started to form on the Frari bell tower in 1904. An investigation began in 1990, and the repairs ran in three phases: a steel cable, mortar injected into the soil, and a structural joint between the tower and the church. The joint took six months and was successful.
Day 3, morning
Next is Campo Santa Margherita.
