The block
The block is made of old brick buildings, many over 200 years old
The Bopiliao Historic Block is a historic street in Wanhua, Taipei. It is made almost completely of one or two story brick buildings, many dating over 200 years ago, and was one of the earliest commercial districts in northern Taiwan.
A school plan
A school plan in 1941 kept the old buildings in place
Urban development under Japanese rule altered the layout of the area and its commercial life declined. In 1941, plans to establish Laosong Elementary School inadvertently preserved the architectural diversity, including red-brick shophouses and Western-style buildings.
Restored
Restoration from 1999 to 2009 turned an abandoned space into a cultural hub
In 1999 the Taipei City Government began efforts to restore the abandoned space. The restoration was completed in 2009, and in 2010 the government officially recognised Bopiliao as a historic site.
Day 1, midday
It comes after Longshan Temple. Then Dihua Street.
