The plan

A memorial museum was announced in 2007 and a Brazilian design won

On May 21, 2007, President Michelle Bachelet announced the construction of a memorial museum, and a public competition for the design followed. A group of Brazilian architects from Estudio America in São Paulo won.

Opening

The first stone was laid in 2008 and the museum opened in 2010

Bachelet laid the first stone on December 10, 2008. The materials for the collection were mostly provided by the organization Casa de la Memoria. She inaugurated the museum on January 11, 2010, two months before the end of her term.

The collection

It holds testimony, letters from prisoners and a last poem by Víctor Jara

The museum commemorates the victims of human rights violations under the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. It houses torture devices, letters from prisoners, clippings and testimony from survivors. Jara's last poem, Estadio Chile, sprawls across the entrance.

Day 3, morning

Next is Parque Quinta Normal.
