1925
An earthquake in 1925 damaged the old courthouse and a new one rose by 1929
Santa Barbara was struck by an earthquake in 1925, which damaged the 1872 Greek Revival courthouse. In 1926 the County began building the new Courthouse on the same site. It was completed in March 1929 and dedicated on August 14, 1929.
The castle
The Courthouse was designed in a Spanish-Andalusian castle style
In 1925 the Board of Supervisors hired the William Mooser Company of San Francisco to design the Courthouse. A small balcony called a Hoard and the Lancet windows copy a castle's defences, and the rotunda staircase is designed as a defensive element.

Mural Room
The Mural Room took Dan Sayer Groesbeck and his team months to paint
The former Supervisors Assembly Room, now the Mural Room, covers over 4,200 square feet. Painted by Dan Sayer Groesbeck, a book illustrator and Hollywood set and costume designer, it shows scenes from local history, including the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542.

The jail
The jail was built for 140 prisoners and its cells follow Alcatraz
The 1929 jail was originally built to house 140 prisoners. Its cells have tool proof bars and are constructed similar to the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in San Francisco. The County built new jail facilities in 1971 and moved its prisoners.
