Niemeyer

Oscar Niemeyer designed the museum, and it was completed in 1996

The museum was designed by Oscar Niemeyer with the assistance of the structural engineer Bruno Contarini, who had worked with him on earlier projects. It was completed in 1996 and is one of the city's main landmarks.

The shape

The saucer-shaped building is 16 meters high with a cupola 50 meters wide

The structure is 16 meters high, and its cupola has a diameter of 50 meters, with three floors. The saucer-shaped modernist building has been likened to a UFO and is set on a cliffside, with a beach at the bottom.

The pool

A reflecting pool surrounds the base like a flower

The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem beach. A reflecting pool of 817 square metres surrounds the cylindrical base, like a flower in the words of Niemeyer. Two doors lead to the viewing gallery, with a view of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain.

The collection

The collection of 1,217 works was assembled from the 1950s by one collector

The museum has a collection of 1,217 works from the art collector João Sattamini. He assembled it from the 1950s, and it is the second largest collection of contemporary art in Brazil.
