The fort

Raja Man Singh built Amber Fort and it grew for 150 years

Amber Fort was built by Raja Man Singh, and Jai Singh I expanded it in the early 1600's. Successive rulers made additions for 150 years, until the Kachwahas moved their capital to Jaipur in 1727.

Four levels

The palace has four levels, each with a courtyard

The palace is built of red sandstone and marble and laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard. It holds the Diwan-e-Aam, the Diwan-e-Khas, the Sheesh Mahal or mirror palace, and the Sukh Niwas.

Sila Devi

Near Ganesh Gate is a temple to Sila Devi, given to Raja Man Singh when he defeated the Raja of Jessore, Bengal in 1604. The Rajput Maharajas worshipped there from the 16th century.

The queens

Raja Man Singh had 12 queens and built 12 rooms

Raja Man Singh had 12 queens, so he made 12 rooms, one for each. Each room had a staircase to the king's room, but the queens were not to go upstairs. Raja Jai Singh had one queen and built one room equal to three old ones.

The passage

A passage was meant to carry the royal family to Jaigarh Fort

The palace and Jaigarh Fort are considered one complex, connected by a subterranean passage. It was meant as an escape route in times of war, so the royal family could shift to the more redoubtable Jaigarh Fort.

Day 2, morning

Next is Jal Mahal.
