The site

A chapel to Saint Clement stood here in the 11th century

Its history dates from a chapel dedicated to Saint Clement in the 11th century. A Dominican monastery was founded in the medieval period, and in 1556 it was transformed into a Jesuit college.

The library

The Baroque library was built between 1709 and 1726

The main building phase was in the years 1709 to 1726, during which the Baroque library was built. The Jesuits remained until their suppression in 1773, when Empress Maria Theresa of Austria established an observatory, library and university.

Firsts

The first World's Fair was held here in 1791

In 1791 the Clementinum was the site of the first World's Fair, an industrial exhibition held to celebrate the coronation of Leopold II as king of Bohemia. The oldest weather recording in the Czech lands started here in 1775.

Borges

Borges set a dream of the Clementinum in a 1943 story

The Clementinum appears in The Secret Miracle, a short story of 1943 by Jorge Luis Borges. In the dream, librarians look for God in the books.

“God is in one of the letters of one of the pages of one of the four hundred thousand books of Clementinum.”
