1842
The first pale lager was brewed here on 5 October 1842
The brewery opened in 1842 in Plzeň, Bohemia. The first beer was brewed here in 1842 by the Bavarian brewer Josef Groll. It was the first brewery to produce a pale lager.
The burghers
Local citizens founded the brewery in 1839
The brewery was founded in 1839 by local Czech-speaking and German-speaking citizens of Plzeň as the Bürgerbrauerei, the citizens' brewery. In 1859 Pilsner Bier was registered as a brand name at the local Chamber of Commerce and Trade.
The name
Urquell means the original source, a name taken as a trademark in 1898
In 1898 the German trademark Urquell and the Czech trademark Prazdroj were created, to underline the claim of being the older, original source of Pilsner beer. Urquell can be roughly translated as the original source at Pilsen.
A style
More than two thirds of the world's beer is now pale lager
Pilsner Urquell was so popular and so much copied that more than two-thirds of the beer produced in the world today is pale lager. The brewery says it has been brewed in the same brewery, to the same recipe and traditional methods like triple decoction, for over 175 years.
175 yearsbrewed in the same brewery with the same recipe
The museum
A brewery museum sits in a medieval brewing house with ice cellars
A brewery museum has been set up near the brewery in the authentic medieval brewing house, a declared cultural monument. It includes the late Gothic malt house, kiln, drying shed and two-level cellars hewn from the Plzeň substrata. The tour has a replica of a pub from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Day 3, afternoon
It comes after Plzeň Historical Underground.
