Sacred place

Sefa-utaki has been a sacred place since early Ryukyuan history

Sefa-utaki on the Chinen Peninsula has been recognized as a sacred place since the earliest period of Ryukyuan history. According to the Chūzan Seikan, it was where Amamikyu, goddess of creation, made landfall on Okinawa.

The rock

Caves and ledges among tall rocks mark the place, with no buildings left

The site comprises caves and overhanging ledges among towering rock formations of a high promontory over the sea. All the buildings have been destroyed, but the outer and inner precincts can still be traced.

The priest

Even the king changed his sleeves to enter beyond the Ujoguchi

In the Ryukyu Kingdom this was the most sacred spot, managed by Kikoe-ōgimi, the highest priest of the state. Utaki were off-limits to men, and even the king had to change his sleeves to conform to women's clothing to enter beyond the Ujoguchi entrance.

Sangui

From Sangui, worship of Kudaka Island is offered from afar

Sangui is the innermost area, where three places of worship are concentrated. From Sangui it is possible to offer remote worship to Kudaka Island, considered the most sacred site associated with the founding of the kingdom.

Day 5, midday

It comes after Gyokusendo Cave. Then Cape Chinen.
