The collection
The site holds the largest collection from Bell's years in Baddeck
The 10-hectare property in Baddeck overlooks the Bras d'Or Lakes. It was designated a National Historic Site in 1952 and is run by Parks Canada. Artifacts from the Bell family's personal museum were donated in 1955.
The hydrofoil
The original hull of the HD-4 hydrofoil set a world speed record
The museum shows the original hull of the hydrofoil boat HD-4. In 1919 it set a world marine speed record in Baddeck by reaching speeds of over 112 km/h.
112 km/hspeed the HD-4 passed in 1919
The Silver Dart
A replica recalls the Silver Dart flight of 1909
A full-scale replica of the AEA Silver Dart is on show. In 1909 J.A.D. MacCurdy piloted it over the ice of Baddeck Bay, the first controlled heavier-than-air craft flown in the British Empire.
Deaf education
Bell's work with the deaf led to the telephone, the museum shows
Displays cover Bell's work in deaf education and how it led to the invention of the telephone. Other exhibits cover his research on speech and sound by wire and by light, and his experiments with kites, planes and high speed boats.
Day 6, afternoon
It comes after Canso Causeway. Then Baddeck.
