The railway
The railway of 1864 began the Russian link with the Riviera
From the mid-19th century Russian nobility visited Nice. In 1864, immediately after the railway reached Nice, Tsar Alexander II visited by train and was attracted by the pleasant climate. Thus began an association between Russians and the French Riviera that continues to this day.
1912
The Tsar paid for the cathedral, which opened in 1912
The cathedral was consecrated in December 1912 to serve the large Russian community in Nice and devout visitors from the imperial court. Tsar Nicholas II funded the construction. It is the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe.
A dispute
Who owned it was settled in court between 2005 and 2013
From 2005 until December 2011 the parish administration and the Russian government were in a dispute over ownership and jurisdiction. A French court ruled in 2010 that the Russian state held the title, and on 10 April 2013 France's highest civil court confirmed the building as the property of the Russian Federation.
Day 2, afternoon
It comes after Marc Chagall Museum. Then Place Masséna.
