Sanudo
Marco Sanudo founded the Kastro in 1207 on the old acropolis
After the Fourth Crusade in 1204, the Venetian Marco Sanudo seized the opportunity to conquer Naxos. From 1207 to 1566 the city was the capital of his Duchy of the Archipelago. On the old acropolis he built the Kastro, the town's fortress.
Inside
The Kastro held a palace, a keep, walls and the cathedral
The fortress comprised the palace, the exterior walls, a keep, a gothic chapel, the houses of the Latin families and the Catholic cathedral. Greeks built their houses between the harbor and the fortress, in the suburbs of Bourgos and Nio Chorio.
A whole town
The Kastro holds a whole medieval town inside its circular walls
The Kastro is a fortified circular fortress on the hill where the ancient acropolis stood. Its walls consist mostly of buildings in a circular arrangement. There are two gates: the main gate, Trani Porta, and a side gate, Paraporti.
The towers
Only the Crispi tower survives, beside the main gate
The Crispi tower, also called the Glezos tower, is a round tower beside the main gate and the only tower of the castle that survives. A large tower of Sanudo once stood at the central square, thought to have exceeded 30 meters. The Crispi tower now houses a museum.
The dukes
Twenty-one dukes of two dynasties ruled until 1566
Twenty-one dukes in two dynasties, Sanudo and Crispo, ruled the Archipelago until 1566. Under the Ottomans the title of Duke of Naxos was no longer hereditary, and was appointed by the Sultan.
Day 1, afternoon
It comes after Naxos Town.
