A sanction

The city paid for the first castle as a punishment for a failed uprising

The first buildings on the site were erected in 1385 and financed by the township of Munich as a sanction for a failed uprising against Stephen III. The Silver Tower was the strongest bastion. The new castle, the Neuveste, replaced the Old Court in the middle of the town.

Distance

The dukes wanted a shelter they could leave without entering the city

The Dukes felt the need to keep some distance from the frequently rebellious city dwellers on the one hand, and some defence against their warlike relatives on the other. They sought a shelter impregnable and easy to leave directly towards the glacis, without having to enter city lanes.

A whole quarter

Over four centuries it swallowed a whole city quarter

After more than four centuries of development, the giant palace had practically replaced a former city quarter of barracks, a monastery, houses and gardens. It brings together the styles of the late Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Neo-Classicism. The Antiquarium was built in 1568 to 1571 for the sculpture collection.

The size

It is the largest city palace in Germany, with ten courtyards

The Residenz is the largest city palace in Germany. The complex contains ten courtyards and displays 130 rooms. A wing contains the Cuvilliés Theatre since the post-war reconstruction, and the Herkulessaal is the main concert venue of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
