Art Deco

It holds the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world

The district holds the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, in styles such as Streamline, Tropical and Med-deco. Most were built between the Great Depression and the early 1940s.

After 1926

Art Deco arrived after a real estate downturn and the hurricane of 1926

The style reached Miami Beach after the real estate market took a downturn in 1925 and the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 left 25,000 people homeless. Before it, buildings were mostly Mediterranean Revival, and many from the 1920s remain.

Ocean Drive

Hotels on Ocean Drive reflect the Moderne style of the world fairs of the 1930s

Hotels on Ocean Drive run from 5th to 15th Streets and front onto Lummus Park. Many reflect the Moderne style shown at the Chicago World's Fair of 1933 and the New York World's Fair of 1939. They include the Tides of 1936 and the Carlyle of 1941.
