Angel Stone
A small carved angel was found in the south porch wall
The Angel Stone is a small carving of an angel with a scroll, found in the wall of the cathedral's south porch. It points to an earlier church on the site. Its Latin inscription translates as: into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.

A collegiate church was founded in 1421 under three dedications
Thomas de la Warre was granted a licence in 1421 to establish a collegiate church in Manchester. The parish church was dedicated to St Mary, St George and St Denys. The college of priests was housed in buildings that survive as Chetham's Library.
The angels
Fourteen angel minstrels hold up the nave roof
At the end of the 15th century James Stanley II rebuilt the nave and choir with high clerestory windows. He gave the nave roof supports in the form of fourteen life-size angel minstrels, and he commissioned the carved choir stalls.
John Dee
John Dee, astrologer to Elizabeth I, was warden here
John Dee, magus and astrologer for Elizabeth I, was warden of the college from 1595 to 1608. He occupied the wardens' lodgings, which are now part of Chetham's Library.
The Blitz
A German bomb in 1940 demolished the Lady Chapel
During the Manchester Blitz in 1940 a German bomb exploded a few yards from the north-east corner. It severely damaged the roofs and demolished the medieval Lady Chapel. The Healing Window of 2004 marks the restoration after an IRA bomb in 1996.
