1860

A trapper's cabin from 1860 still stands on this shore

The Washoe people made a summer home on this lakeshore, and their stone mortars can be found in the park. The trapper William "General" Phipps was the first white settler on the land. The cabin he built in 1860 still stands.

1903

A banker built Pine Lodge in 1903, with water from the lake

In 1903 the San Francisco banker Isaias W. Hellman built Pine Lodge, also known as the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion. It had electric lighting, indoor plumbing and water directly from the lake. The estate had a tennis court, two boathouses, and cabins for 27 resident staff.

1960

Olympic skiers raced through these woods in 1960

The 1960 Winter Olympics were held in and around the nearby Squaw Valley Ski Resort. The biathlon and cross-country skiing events took place in what is now the state park. Each January the park and the western shore hold an Olympic Heritage Celebration Week.

1965

The Hellman family sold the estate to the state in 1965

Hellman's family spent summers on the estate for decades and sold it to the state in 1965, when the park was established. The family still provides funds for the upkeep of the mansion. In 2003 the park took its present name, to honor Edwin L. Z'berg, a state assemblyman who worked to develop state parks.

Day 2, evening

It comes after D. L. Bliss State Park.
