Founded 1934

A retreat for nuns founded in 1934 was rebuilt in the Tang style

Chi Lin Nunnery is a large Buddhist temple complex in Diamond Hill, Kowloon. It was founded in 1934 as a retreat for Buddhist nuns and rebuilt in 1998 in the traditional Tang dynasty style. Its halls hold statues of the Sakyamuni Buddha and Guanyin.

No nails

The buildings are cypress wood, joined without nails

The design is based on a Sukhavati drawing in the Mogao Caves. The complex is built entirely of cypress wood, without nails, using special interlocking cuts in the wood to hold the parts in place. It has 16 halls, a library, a school, a pagoda, a bell tower and a drum tower.
