The building

The red-brick building was a sugar factory in 1890

The red-brick building was erected in 1890 as a factory of the Sapporo Sugar Company, and opened as a museum in July 1987. It is the only beer museum in Japan.

Clark

William Clark hoped to bring beet cultivation to Hokkaidō

William Smith Clark, president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, started beer production and hoped to establish beet cultivation in Hokkaidō during his stay. The first beet cultivation there was at Nanae Village, now part of Hakodate.

The brewery

A brewery opened in 1876 under an engineer trained in Germany

The Kaitaku-shi Brewery was established on September 23, 1876, built by the government official Murahashi Hisanari. Its chief engineer, Seibei Nakagawa, learned brewing technique in Germany. The Sapporo Beer Company was established in December 1887.

From sugar

The brewery used the old sugar factory from 1903 to 1965

Japanese sugar manufacture declined after 1895, and the beet factory was liquidated. In 1903 the Sapporo Beer Company bought and remodeled it as a brewery, which operated until 1965. The museum opened to the public in July 1987.

Declined

The museum declined a cultural property listing in 1996

In 1996 the Agency for Cultural Affairs proposed to register the museum as one of the Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The museum declined, because government permission would be required to remodel the building each time. It became a Hokkaidō Heritage site in 2004.

Day 1, afternoon

It comes after Sapporo Clock Tower. Then Moerenuma Park.
