On a warehouse
A glass wave sits on top of an old brick warehouse
The new construction resembles a hoisted sail, a water wave, an iceberg or a quartz crystal resting on top of an old brick warehouse, Kaispeicher A, near the historical Speicherstadt. The original 1966 brick facade was retained at the base of the building.
A private idea
A couple started it, and the city took it over
The project is the result of a private initiative by the architect and developer Alexander Gérard and his wife Jana Marko, an art historian, who commissioned the original design from the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron. They promoted the project for 3.5 years until the City of Hamburg decided to develop it itself.
The cost
The cost rose from about 200 million euros to 870 million
The foundation stone was laid on 2 April 2007, and construction was originally scheduled to finish by 2010. The project was criticised for cost and schedule overruns: construction was originally estimated at about 200 million euros, while the final cost was 870 million. It opened on 11 January 2017.

The Plaza
A curved escalator rises to a public viewing deck on the eighth floor
The building has 26 floors, with the first eight inside the brick facade, and reaches 108 metres at its western side. About one thousand glass windows are curved. A curved escalator connects the ground floor with the Plaza, an observation deck on the 8th floor, which is accessible to the public.
Day 1, evening
It comes after HafenCity.
