1640
Its first battle came a year after the foundation stone
The foundation stone was laid in 1640. In January 1641, during the Catalan Revolt, the fort saw its first battle. An army of 26,000 men sent to crush the revolt was defeated at the Battle of Montjuïc by Catalan forces led by Francesc de Tamarit.
The British
In 1705 a British regiment captured the fortress
In 1694 new bastions and battlements were built and the fortress became a castle. In the Siege of Barcelona in 1705 it was captured by the British 6th Regiment of Foot, led by Lt.-Col William Southwell, who was afterwards made Governor of the castle.
Rebuilt
The old fort was demolished in 1751, and 120 cannons were added
Giovanni Antonio Medrano drew up the design in 1730. The old fort was demolished in 1751, creating the current structure. Its final shape took form between 1779 and 1799, when the castle was equipped with 120 cannons.
No shot
The French took the castle without firing a shot
During the Napoleonic Wars the French Army entered Barcelona. On orders from Napoleon, they captured the castle without firing a shot, because the troops guarding it were ordered not to fight.
A hard history
The castle is remembered for torture and for an execution in 1940
In the late 19th century Montjuïc was synonymous with barbarism, because anarchists and others imprisoned there were tortured. Lluís Companys, president of the Generalitat of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War, was executed here on orders from the Spanish State in 1940.
