The house
Rembrandt lived and worked in the house from 1639 to 1658
Between 1639 and 1658 the house on the Jodenbreestraat was occupied by Rembrandt van Rijn, who also had his studio and art dealership there. It was built around 1606 and renovated around 1627, probably under Jacob van Campen, who gave it an extra floor and a new facade with a triangular pediment.
Bankruptcy
The house was auctioned in 1658 after Rembrandt's bankruptcy
Rembrandt bought the house on 5 January 1639. After his bankruptcy it was auctioned in 1658. In the following centuries it was used as a residence and renovated several times, and by the beginning of the 20th century it was in poor condition.
The museum
Amsterdam bought the house in 1907 and the museum opened in 1911
The house was purchased in 1907 by the municipality of Amsterdam, which donated it to the Rembrandthuis foundation. Karel de Bazel restored it between 1907 and 1911. The museum opened on 10 June 1911, and Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik were the first visitors.
The rooms
The rooms were rebuilt from the inventory of the bankruptcy
The museum shows Rembrandt's living room, art room and the studio where he created his masterpieces. The building was redesigned in the 20th century on the basis of the inventory drawn up during his bankruptcy in 1656, which gives an idea of a private house and artist's studio of the 17th century.
Two pots
Two pots found in the cesspool were used by Rembrandt
In 2019 research showed that two pots found in 1997 in Rembrandt's cesspool were in fact used by the artist. One contains remnants of quartz soil, a mixture of quartz and clay with which he prepared his canvases. The two pots are on display in the museum.
Day 3, afternoon
It comes after Magere Brug. Then Oude Kerk.
