1859

The first chapel of Saint Sebastian was wooden and covered in straw

The first chapel of Saint Sebastian built in Manaus dates back to 1859. It was a wooden chapel, covered in straw, and served the lay members of the Brotherhood of Saint Sebastian. It stood on the old Conde D'Eu Street, now Monsenhor Coutinho.

The plan

The plan came from the architect of the Metropolitan Cathedral

The floor plan was designed by Sebastião José Basílio Pyrrho, the same architect who projected the current Metropolitan Cathedral of Manaus. In May 1877, with the church still under construction, materials left over from the Mother Church were approved for the new temple.

Stalled

The first contractor retired and left the church unfinished

Ambrósio Bruno Cadis was hired in 1884 to build the ceiling, architrave, stucco, vault ceilings and altars. In October 1886 he retired from the city and left the church unfinished. His contract was terminated in January 1887 and the Public Works Department took over.

1888

Friar Jesualdo Macchetti blessed the finished church in 1888

On 7 September 1888 Friar Jesualdo Macchetti blessed the new church in the presence of civil, military and ecclesiastical authorities and the faithful. It became a parish in 1912, the third Catholic temple in Manaus to gain major religious status.

The style

The style mixes Gothic and Neoclassical, with European panels and stained glass

The church is known for its eclectic style, with elements of several genres such as Gothic and Neoclassical. Its interior is characterized by European panels and stained glass windows, typical of the beginning of the rubber cycle. In 1988 it was listed as a Historical Heritage Site.

Day 1, morning

It comes after Teatro Amazonas. Then Adolpho Lisboa Market.
